Why Is My AC Freezing Up?
Ice on an air conditioner is always a symptom, never the disease. Here are the four things that actually cause it and how to tell them apart.
It is 92 degrees, your house will not cool down, and when you go outside to look at the unit there is a block of ice on the refrigerant line. It feels like a contradiction — how does an air conditioner freeze in July?
The short answer: your AC is not making cold. It is moving heat. When something interrupts that heat transfer, the coil temperature drops below freezing, and the moisture that the system normally pulls out of your air turns to ice instead of running down the drain.
Ice is the symptom. There are four realistic causes, and they are worth knowing apart, because two of them you can fix yourself in an afternoon and two of them need a technician.
First: shut it off
Before diagnosing anything, turn the cooling off and set your thermostat fan to ON.
This matters more than people expect. Running a frozen system does real damage — liquid refrigerant that should have boiled off in the coil returns to the compressor instead, and compressors are built to compress vapor, not liquid. That is how a $300 repair becomes a $2,500 one.
Fan-only mode pushes warm room air across the coil and thaws it far faster than just switching everything off. Give it two to four hours. Put a towel down; there will be more water than you expect.
Cause 1: Restricted airflow
This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and it is the one homeowners can usually solve without a service call.
Your evaporator coil needs a steady volume of warm air moving across it. That warm air is what keeps the coil above freezing while the refrigerant inside it does its job. Choke off the airflow and the coil temperature falls until condensation stops draining and starts accumulating as frost.
Things that restrict airflow, roughly in order of how often we find them:
- A filter nobody has changed. A filter that has gone from white to gray is still working. One that has gone dark and matted is a wall.
- Closed or blocked supply registers. Closing vents in unused rooms does not save money — it raises static pressure across the whole system.
- A dirty blower wheel. Dust cakes onto the fan blades and quietly destroys their ability to move air. You will not see this without pulling a panel.
- Crushed or disconnected flex duct. Common in older Harrisburg homes where ductwork was retrofitted into tight joist bays and basements.
- A fouled evaporator coil. Dust that got past a bad filter bonds to the wet coil fins and forms an insulating mat.
What you can do: replace the filter, open every register, and make sure nothing is stacked against a return. If the ice comes back within a day of thawing, the restriction is somewhere you cannot reach.
Cause 2: Low refrigerant
Refrigerant is not consumed. Your system does not "use it up" and need a top-off the way a car uses oil. A system that is low on refrigerant has a leak, full stop.
When the charge drops, pressure in the evaporator coil drops with it. Lower pressure means a lower boiling point, which means the coil runs colder than designed — cold enough to freeze.
The tells:
- Ice forms first at the inlet of the coil or on the large insulated line at the outdoor unit
- The system runs constantly and never satisfies the thermostat
- You hear hissing or bubbling near the indoor unit
- This has happened before and someone "added refrigerant" to fix it
That last point deserves emphasis. Adding refrigerant to a leaking system is not a repair. It buys a season, vents refrigerant into the atmosphere, and leaves you paying for the same thing again next summer. A proper repair means finding the leak, fixing it, pulling a vacuum, and weighing in a correct charge.
What you can do: nothing, and that is not us being precious about it. Refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification to purchase and handle the refrigerant at all.
Cause 3: A failing blower motor
Sometimes airflow is restricted not because something is blocking it but because the fan itself is giving up. A blower motor that is drawing high amps and spinning slow, a failed capacitor, or a bad motor bearing all produce the same result as a clogged filter: not enough air across the coil.
The distinguishing sign is noise. Motors rarely fail silently. Listen for humming when the system should be running, a rattle or grinding that was not there last year, or a fan that takes several seconds to get up to speed.
Cause 4: Running it when it is too cold out
This one surprises people. Most residential air conditioners are not designed to run when the outdoor temperature drops below roughly 60°F. The pressures inside the system are calibrated for summer conditions, and below that threshold the evaporator coil can drop below freezing even with everything working perfectly.
We see it in May and September, usually after a warm afternoon when someone leaves cooling on overnight and the temperature falls into the fifties. It is also common on finished basements, where the room stays cold and the thermostat keeps calling for cooling that the space does not need.
What Central PA humidity has to do with it
Freeze-ups cluster in humid stretches, and there is a reason. The wetter the air, the more moisture condenses on the coil, and the more raw material there is to turn into ice the moment the coil dips below 32°F. A marginal airflow problem that would go unnoticed in a dry climate becomes a visible block of ice during a humid week along the Susquehanna.
If your system freezes only during humid stretches and runs fine otherwise, that usually points to a borderline airflow restriction rather than a refrigerant problem — the system is right on the edge, and humidity pushes it over.
The honest decision tree
- Thaw it. Fan ON, cooling OFF, two to four hours.
- Replace the filter. Then open every register and clear every return.
- Run it again. If it cools normally and stays that way, it was airflow.
- If it freezes again within 24 hours, stop running it and call someone. Continuing to cycle a freezing system is how compressors die.
When to just call
Call rather than keep experimenting if any of these apply:
- It has frozen more than once this season
- Someone added refrigerant to this system in the past two years
- You hear hissing, grinding, or humming from the equipment
- There is oily residue on the refrigerant lines or around the coil — that is a refrigerant leak signature
- The system is more than 12 years old and this is a new behavior

The part worth remembering
An air conditioner that freezes is telling you something specific: heat is not getting to the coil, or the refrigerant is not carrying it away. Those are the only two possibilities.
Change the filter first — it is free, it takes five minutes, and it genuinely solves a large share of the freeze-ups we get called about. But if it comes back, do not keep thawing and restarting. Each cycle puts liquid refrigerant through a compressor that was not built to handle it, and that is the one failure on an AC system that usually ends the conversation about repair.
